Class 7 visits Hamburg

Class 7 visits Hamburg

Die 7. Klasse vor einem Schiff

Hamburg is known as the "Gateway to the World". With its impressive harbour, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and the Speicherstadt warehouse district, there is a lot to discover here. Our 7th graders were also thrilled by the northern German metropolis. During our project trip, the students were able to get to know the port city extensively in five days.

We started the first day in bright sunshine with a harbour tour. During the trip with “Captain Prüsse”, the classes explored the harbour and the old warehouse district and heard exciting stories about the Hanseatic League. The next day, the historical exploration continued: in the Speicherstadt Museum, the pupils visited an old warehouse and learned about goods that came from all over the world and were used for trade at that time. They also learned about professions that no longer exist today or exist in a different form due to technical progress. In the afternoon, the Landungsbrücken were on the agenda. Here our group went on a discovery tour of a large museum freighter, the "Cap San Diego". Particularly impressive: the large engine room and the narrow long shaft tunnel.

On the third and fourth day, we visited the Greenpeace headquarters in small groups. Here, the students could learn about the history and work of the organisation and become active themselves in the permanent exhibition. In discussion groups, we exchanged ideas about plastic pollution, climate change and their consequences. Our climate working group was also able to present its projects at our school. While one group visited Greenpeace, the other group saw the International Maritime Museum Hamburg. During the museum talk, the students were able to immerse themselves in port and economic history with the museum educator. Of course, we did not miss a visit to the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall and a visit to the beach on the Elbe.

After many impressions, experience and delicious fish sandwiches, we went home again on the fifth day. As with the class trip in 2020 with the former 7th graders, we know this time too: Hamburg, we'll be back!
