2nd place in the architecture competition

On September 9, Klax School was awarded 2nd place in the architecture competition "My Vertical City"!

A total of 28 schools with 38 projects participated in the competition of the Brandenburg and Berlin Chamber of Architects. Since 1999, members of the Berlin Chamber of Architects have been visiting Berlin schools as part of their "Architecture and Schools" initiative and have been working with teachers to develop teaching programs on the topics of architecture and urban planning. On their website they state:

Architecture is built environment - to be experienced everywhere.  Architecture is multidisciplinary - ideal for interdisciplinary teaching in the classroom. Those who know more about their own environment will encounter it more consciously and attentively.

In their project "Memory Tower/Gedächtnisturm," the students from the 6th grade explored the theme of memory and, inspired by a visit to the Memorial Church, designed their vertical city. As part of Cleanup Day 2021, they collected broken glass, washed and sorted it. From this, the young people developed new glass blocks as material for their city. They report on their design:

"Our towers are sometimes transparent and sometimes colorful, depending on what kind of glass shards we find. Everything is recycled and reused. If you don't need the first floor, it's recycled and melted back down. Thus, the towers change like our memory: something stays, something disappears or becomes new."

The project was accompanied by the architect Astrid Bornheim and teachers from Klax School.

We are very proud of the great interest of the students and their successful participation in this competition. With their ideas for urban development, the students not only inspired the jury!
