An Intercultural Learning Experience
From November 14 to 21, 2024, ten students from grades 3 to 8 at Klax School participated in an Erasmus+ project in Santa Cruz, Tenerife. The trip aimed to foster intercultural exchange with the partner school C.E.I.P. Tíncer while deeply engaging with educational themes such as sustainability, environmental protection, and cultural understanding.
Where Education Meets Practice: Learning Through Experience
The trip centered on the “17 Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs). The students participated in regular classes at the partner school and tackled hands-on projects. In La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they took part in a mathematically and historically themed city rally, solving riddles to explore the city's architecture and history interactively.
Another highlight was the creation of stop-motion films. Collaborating with students from the partner school, they produced short films addressing sustainability. These films will be featured in a shared online advent calendar, fostering collaboration between partner schools in different countries.
Nature as a Classroom
The breathtaking natural landscapes of Tenerife were purposefully integrated into the learning experience. During a hike through the Anaga Mountains, a biosphere reserve, the participants explored the island’s diverse flora and fauna. At the botanical garden “Palmetum,” they discovered how a former landfill was transformed into an ecological haven. These activities heightened environmental awareness and sparked scientific curiosity among the students.
Making a Difference for the Environment
On the final day, participants took a stand for climate action. Alongside the organization Terramare and C.E.I.P. Tíncer students, they cleaned Porís de Abona Beach, heavily polluted with plastic waste from around the world. During the cleanup, they discussed innovative solutions for reducing waste and became more aware of global environmental issues.
About the "Our Happy Future" Club and Partnership
Founded in 2022, the "Our Happy Future" Club at Klax School focuses on sustainability and intercultural exchange. Previous projects include a shared online advent calendar, theater productions, and virtual classes. These partnerships are enriched by reciprocal visits, such as last year’s hosting of students from Tenerife, Finland, and Latvia in Berlin.
Conclusion: Education Without Borders
This trip was a holistic learning experience that extended far beyond traditional classroom education. It deepened awareness of global challenges, strengthened intercultural competence, improved language skills, and fostered students' independence.
Returning to Berlin with fresh insights, inspiring memories, and new friendships, the "Our Happy Future" members are eager to share their experiences with the school community and continue working toward a sustainable future.
This project was co-financed by the European Union.
