140 pupils create a bilingual theatre production about friendship and responsibility
On 12 May 2026, pupils from the primary section of Klax International School presented the bilingual theatre production “Friends for Life – A Dog is Looking for a Home” in two performances. On stage in the gym, the results of an intensive project week became visible, during which around 140 pupils from Years 1 to 6 worked together to develop and realise a theatre piece.
Around 90 children took part in ensemble workshops in acting, choreography and band. A further 50 or so pupils contributed to set design, props, costumes and video documentation. They were supported by artists and their learning facilitators.
At the centre of this year’s production was the dog Gens, who, in search of a new home, experiences various adventures and comes to understand what friendship, trust and responsibility mean. The pupils explored these themes in accompanying workshops on friendship, travel and pets, as well as during excursions, including visits to the workshops of the Berlin Volksbühne and various museums and cultural institutions. The outcomes of this project work were presented in an exhibition prior to the performances, offering insights into the wide range of perspectives the pupils had explored during the project week.
The theatre project week is a permanent feature in the Klax International School calendar. It offers pupils the opportunity to actively shape creative processes, take on responsibility and contribute their own ideas. Within just a few days, not only scenes and stage designs are created, but also valuable experiences in collaboration, communication and artistic expression.
The two performances demonstrated the commitment, creativity and team spirit with which the children brought the joint theatre project to life in a short space of time. Many thanks go to all participating pupils, the artists, the learning facilitators and all other supporters who contributed to the success of the project week.
